Kotebetta stands tall at around 1,620 m (approximately 5400 ft) above sea level, making it the third-highest peak in the Coorg region after Tadiyandamol and Brahmagiri. The name “Kote Betta” means “Fort Hill” in Kannada, named so because the peak resembles the shape of a fort. At the summit, you can find an ancient Shiva temple with stunning panoramic views of the surrounding Western Ghats.

Trekking Experience

The trek usually starts near Hattihole village (a junction near a small bridge) and covers about 10 km one way from the trailhead to the peak.

The trail is moderate in difficulty, suitable for both beginners with basic fitness and regular trekkers.

You’ll walk through lush coffee estates, small streams, patches of forest, and open slopes, making the route both tranquil and refreshing.

The trek typically takes 3–4 hours to reach the summit and the same time to return, depending on your pace.

How to Reach Kotebetta

Kotebetta doesn’t have its own air or rail connectivity, so you’ll have to travel via nearby major points and then continue by road.

✈️ By Air

The nearest major airport is Mangalore International Airport, roughly 140–160 km from Coorg.

Other options include Kannur International Airport (~120 km) and Mysore Airport (~120 km) for domestic flights.

From the airport, you can hire a taxi or take a bus to reach Madikeri or Somwarpet, and from there proceed to Hattihole, the trek base.

The nearest major railway station is Mysore Junction (MYS), about 110–130 km away.

Other nearby railway stations include Mangalore Junction (~140–150 km) and Hassan (~120 km).

From these railheads, taxis or buses are available to reach Madikeri or Somwarpet.

🚗 By Road

Kotebetta is well connected by road. Coorg (Madikeri) is accessible via buses and private taxis from cities like Mysore, Bangalore, and Mangalore.

From Madikeri, Kotebetta lies about 22–32 km away, depending on the exact route you take.
